Sprouting Whole Grains Gains Popularity With Chicken Owners

May 17, 2019

More and more chicken owners are starting to sprout their own grains. They are starting with Cluckin’ Good Organic 3-Grain Scratch from Scratch and Peck Feeds.

Scratch and Peck Feeds is dedicated to promoting sustainable farming practices and producing healthy, wholesome, and clean animal feeds using quality ingredients. Diana Ambauen-Meade started making her own chicken feed in 2009 because she couldn’t find a high quality organic whole grain feed in stores. What started as a small operation in her backyard with a borrowed cement mixer has now turned into a successful, full-blown animal feed mill in Northern Washington; by 2013, Scratch and Peck Feeds was both certified organic and Non-GMO Project Verified.

Cluckin’ Good Organic 3-Grain Scratch  is a corn-free, Non-GMO Project Verified, and Certified Organic product.

This product is intended as a supplemental treat to a complete diet feed as it does not contain trace nutrients, probiotics and enzymes found in Layer. Scratch should be offered in smaller amounts than their feed due to the high carbohydrate content which can result in fattening your birds.

Cluckin’ Good Organic 3-Grain Scratch is an excellent treat choice for summer as this mix contains slower digesting grains helping to prevent overheating during warm months. For colder winter months, try Cluckin’ Good Organic Scratch n’ Corn which contains organic corn for carbohydrates that will create more energy to help keep your birds warm.

In sprouted grains, complex compounds become simple compounds, and the digestibility of the nutrients increases. More vitamins and minerals going into your animals lead to overall better health. Please note that sprouting grains doesn’t replace a complete feed and serving a well balanced layer ration is still recommended.

Fermenting certified organic feeds increases nutrient absorption and satiation, and requires less feed per serving.

The processes can be easily done on a kitchen counter or covered outdoor patio.

For more information on sprouting please see video at the top of this page. We only provide the grains, other items mentioned in video such as canning jars and stainless steel screen will need to purchased elsewhere.
